Matinee festival of experimental music showcasing LD/neurodivergent artists from London crew The Gate and the local Brighton scene.
We are really excited to be collaborating with The Gate – the brilliant creative studio / label for LD /Neurodivergent artists in west London. We are also inviting some of our favourite collectives and labels Ceremonial Laptop, Safehouse & Chocolate Monk to contribute to the lineup..
Expect an awesome lineup of eclectic music for a special one off matinee show. From vocal loops and improv to future hip hop, EDM, tripped out funk and more. The Gate has already collaborated with many venues around the country including Cafe Oto and Supernormal Festival – we can’t wait for them to and do it here at The Rose Hill!

SHIT CREEK
“Working in experimental and improvised music for upwards of a decade, Eloise Duffy’s manic project Shit Creek rarely settles long on a single sound palette.
From violin tape loop hiss on early self-released CD-Rs (2017-2018); to psychedelic bricolage on The Land Of The Remember (Crow Versus Crow, 2020); to underwater dream-songs on The Strangest Part Of The Dream Is That The Water Was Alive (Ikuisuus, 2021); to glittering harmonium drone on Time Is The True River (Liquid Library, 2023).
Fresh off performing at Colour Out Of Space 9, she’s currently blending recorded, found and sampled sounds into maximalist, joyful collages which poke at tensions between nature and artifice, sacred and absurd, desire and lack. Constantly falling over, shattering and reconstituting – a radiant absence, a reaching for a light.”
Labake Sabbath x Wayne’s Drones
Labake Sabbath is a dynamic singer and spoken word artist who is also a lyrical free improviser. She writes music often with playful humour, sometimes about her lived experiences. This includes themes such as navigating public transport with limited mobility, memories of her friends who have passed on and celebrations of The Gate where she makes strong visual art as well as her music. Her live show incorporates this visual art and is as sincere and heartfelt as it is humorous. Her recent collaboration with Wayne from The Gate, who makes distinct drones on keys, brings in a frank and bewitching spoken word aspect to her work.
Wayne is a long-time member of 54 the Gate, who can play deep and mystifying drones for hours on the Gate’s freestanding keyboard. Lately he has moved over to the smaller Korg, which we can bring to gigs. His recent first-time collab with Labake Sabbath electrified Klein’s residency at OTO — so here the duo return, with more gigs and a release planned for the future… Listen on bandcamp

Gate Loops
Gate Loops is an experimental collective from The Gate in Shepherd’s Bush, London. The project began as an accessible vehicle to encourage folks who don’t normally play musical instruments (and one or two that do!) to jam and join in, in a freeform way loosely based around a structure developed in workshops. Using self-made noise boxes, tape loops, and loop pedal, the work is never predictable and always compelling and with the deep sense of humour that the group share. Listen on Bandcamp
Love Permanent
Love Permanent is the Gate’s improv band, which comes together every Friday for a jam session at The Gate in which music facilitators jam with Gate artists. There is a predisposition towards tripped-out funk but it is stylistically unpredictable in the best way — it just depends who shows up on the day.
Mr AKA Amazing
Duane Warner (known as Mr AKA Amazing) makes distinctively vulnerable lo-fi hip-hop and distorted EDM, which he builds around voice notes using his phone. His softly spoken lyrics are raw and vulnerable, often about feeling misunderstood, although when performing live he enters a hyped-up surrealist freestyle mode.

Darren 2Decks is an intuitive musician and a born performer, equally at home freestyling or handling every stage of production. A longstanding member of The Gate, he brings a razor-sharp battle style of hip-hop that hits the audience like a storm. listen on bandcamp
Matt Clarke + guest player Jonny Schachter

Matt Clark is an improvising guitarist and composer based in Brighton, working across experimental music, free improvisation, contemporary composition and collaborative performance. His work explores chance procedures, twelve-tone frameworks, graphic scores, systems-based composition and extended guitar techniques, seeking unexpected musical relationships beyond conventional harmony and melody. He performs regularly across the UK with a range of ensembles and long-term collaborations, including Larker with pianist/violinist Annie Kerr, Simian Carbuncle with guitarist Adrian Southby, MC3 with trumpeter and flugelhornist Charlotte Keeffe, and duos with cellist Khabat Abas and percussionist Mark Wastell. These projects have informed an evolving practice that combines open improvisation with structured compositional frameworks. An active member of Brighton’s Safehouse collective and a regular participant in London’s Mopomoso improvised music series, Matt has performed extensively in Brighton and London with leading improvisers and experimental musicians. His work has been broadcast on Resonance FM and BBC Radio 3.
Jonny is a trombone, flugelhorn and tenor saxophonist, with a love of jazz and rock/pop music. He loves improvising and is currently taking regular trombone lessons to further develop his playing skills. He is a regular participant in Grace Eyre performances, providing a musical backdrop to many plays and musical productions.
Adrian Southby + Guest player Elliot Duffeild
Adrian Southby is a Brighton based multi-instrumentalist equally at home exploring song form and free improvisation. He is a core member of Brighton’s Safehouse Collective and regularly collaborates in the heady free improv scenes of London and Brighton with many players, most frequently in duos with Matt Clark or Mark Wastell. When improvising he favours prepared guitar and alto clarinet.
Elliot is a saxophonist and painter who loves jazz. He paints and plays in a free jazz style and regularly performs with Carousel, and his artwork has been exhibited at Grace Eyre and Artists Open Houses
New Gardeners Society
The New Gardeners Society is the resident house band for Ceremonial Laptop. Ceremonial laptop are Brighton based collective and record label.
