SOUL TO SOUL: HYENAS

Black History Month 2026

What happens when a community’s hopes for prosperity and progress collide with the legacies of colonialism, global capitalism and the violence of the past?

Sandpit Collective in partnership with The Rose Hill, present, as part of the Other Asias Film Programme, Soul to Soul: Cinematic Routes of Return, a three-film season tracing routes between Africa and its diasporas through independence, migration, belonging and return.

Closing the season, Hyenas takes us to postcolonial Senegal, where the fabulously wealthy Linguère Ramatou returns after decades away to her impoverished hometown of Colobane. She offers its inhabitants a seemingly miraculous proposition: wealth beyond their imagining. But her generosity comes at a devastating price.

Hyenas
Djibril Diop Mambéty, 1992
Senegal
Running time: 110 mins

Adapted with extraordinary freedom from Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s The Visit, Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Hyenas transforms a European tale into a dazzling, darkly comic vision of postcolonial Senegal. As imported goods begin to flood the town and collective morality gives way to desire, Mambéty asks what independence means in a world increasingly governed by money, consumption and global capital.

If Soul to Soul begins our season with the possibility of return as cultural reconnection, Hyenas brings us back to Africa through a very different homecoming. Linguère returns not in search of belonging but possessing the power to transform the community she left behind. Return becomes revenge; liberation confronts capital; and the promise of prosperity carries its own violence.

Closing Soul to Soul: Cinematic Routes of Return, Hyenas takes us from the hopes and encounters of the independence era towards the contradictions of the postcolonial present. It leaves us with a final question: what happens to the promise of liberation when political independence encounters the power of global capital?

The screening will be introduced (15 mins) and will be followed by an informal facilitated discussion.
