We can’t quite believe its been a decade!?! What a journey!! 10 years of brilliant, daring and adventurous performances from world class musicians from all corners of the globe. We’ve had residencies and collective takeovers, we’ve had brilliant albums recorded and released here, we’ve had write ups in publications around the world and we’ve firmly established ourselves as a hotspot for innovative and inspiring music. Not to mention the brilliant youth projects, the countless charity fundraisers, book launches, zine fairs, clothes swaps, lectures, workshops, poetry nights, screenings and more!
The tavern was rescued from the claws of property developers by the Save The Rose Hill Community Group in 2015, and became the first building in Brighton to have an Asset of Community Value tag put on it. That’s when we were lucky enough to get hold of it and reopen it to the community in a new guise, The Rose Hill music venue and studios. We know we’re just a tiny space on a back street of Brighton, but The Rose Hill has blossomed into a place with genuine cultural significance. Obviously it’s important for all you wonderful regulars: our beloved community, people who trust the programming enough to take a punt on a strange band they’ve never heard of and who come night after night to support quality live music. But it is also hard to get across to you quite how much touring artists appreciate it – the endless love we get back from all the world class musicians that grace our stage really keeps us going. In truth there are very few places left like us: fully programmed rather than a space for hire, family run where we care enormously about every facet – the comfort and wellbeing of the artists playing, the quality and variety of the programme, the sound quality, the importance of inclusion and being somewhere for audiences and artists to feel free, uninhibited and safe.
“when I was writing this music I pictured myself playing it on The Rose Hill stage” Seb Rochford (Mercury Prize winning artist) with Finding Ways
“when we found out we were playing The Rose Hill we were all really excited, I mean The Rose Hill is A PLACE” – Umut Adan, Turkey

Its a labour of love. Small capacity venues are notoriously difficult to make work and we’ve had all sorts of curveballs on top of that – the covid years, unprecedented inflation and a huge rise in costs, Brexit and complications for artists touring from abroad etc. We try hard to consistently bring you an exciting programme, to not push prices up so far that people can’t afford to come or buy drinks, and to make sure that all the weirder and wonderful corners of the Brighton’s creative scene have a place they can call home!
Also we had our first child a month before we opened, ha! It’s been all consuming, we live above and work through the weekends. Its relentless and tiring. But also relentlessly rewarding, relentlessly life affirming and relentlessly nourishing.
So come and celebrate this milestone with us!! Come and be joyful and hang out. Come watch wonderful music. And come show your appreciation for the extraordinary amount of effort that goes on in the background to make it all work, our amazing team (like seriously), all the inspirational musicians and promoters and most of all YOU, our brilliant community!!
(Also a big up to all the people behind the scenes working tirelessly and usually semi-philanthropically to keep the grassroots music and arts scene going in the Uk and beyond!!)
