Due to unforeseen circumstances, Tansy Spinks will no longer curate this Listen Club; Sound Art Brighton member Olivia Louvel will step in to present her work on Barbara Hepworth.

‘The Sculptor Speaks’ (2020) is a video art piece based on a 1961 tape by British sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The tape’s initial purpose was for a pre-recorded talk with slides for the British Council. Having unearthed the tape at the British Library, Olivia Louvel designed a new sound environment for it. Working at the intersection of creation and documentation, Louvel broadens our understanding of Barbara Hepworth’s legacy through an aural investigation of the voice.

Olivia Louvel is a composer, multidisciplinary artist and researcher whose work is presented through sound recordings, sound art installations and video art. Her research draws on a long-standing exploration of the voice and hybrid practices at the intersection of sound and sculpture. This manifests in various forms, including applying sculptural principles to the voice of Barbara Hepworth, creating generative sound reliefs, 3D voice prints and investigating the acoustics of site-specific sculptures. She received a PhD in Arts and Communication from the University of Brighton and is a member of Sound Art Brighton and the Hepworth Research Network. Her work was awarded an Ivor Novello/Best Sound Art at the Ivors Classical Awards 2023 for her sonic intervention ‘LOL’.

About Listen Club

A programme of unusual sound-works, soundscape composition, and music from the present and the past, chosen by Sound Art Brighton artists and invited guests.
Listen club is all about coming together to listen to music with the possibility of sharing impressions and casual discussion afterwards. Listen Club hopes to provide a counterpoint to the quick paced personal consumption of music with a more patient shared experience; a deep listen, together, in order to foster community.

Curators will guide the experience – briefly discussing the details of the selections and providing background on the music and artists chosen. We aim to present a variety of styles and listening experiences that may include anything from long duration singular sound works to a series of work on a particular theme. On average we will listen together for 45min to an hour, with time for discussion and conversation afterwards.

Once a month, 7-9pm, at The Rose Hill
