A welcome return to the Rose Hill for this pairing of William D Drake and Crayola Lectern! William D Drake is a former member of influential cult band Cardiacs, and has gone on to release two albums with Sea Nymphs and a further five albums under his own name.
His music is feast of gorgeous instrumentation, masterful piano, jaunty wheezing hurdy-gurdy and harmonium, narrated with growly vocals and angelic choral singing. Weaving layers of textured melody with rock and ancient folk flavoured undertones, he journeys through the surreal and psychedelic, telling curious tales with a sideways humour.
Prog Magazine ranks William simultaneously 89th and 14th Greatest Artists of All Time (solo and with Cardiacs). He is regularly championed by Marc Riley and Stuart Maconie of BBC6 Music and snooker legend turned DJ and broadcaster Steve Davis!
Crayola Lectern's music has been described as "what psychedelia would have sounded like, had the Edwardians invented it" and "kosmick melanchodelia". The trio will be performing a selection of piano-led material where experimental and avant-garde collide with romantic classical and popular song, and nods to the Canterbury sound with the heart on its sleeve.
The third Crayola album - 'Disasternoon' - is in the pipeline.
