World's Fairs and Future Living
The future as seen from the past and viewed in the present, has a multiplicity of perspectives and interpretations. Post-war world expositions staged extraordinary presentations of the many wonders of science and technology, and revealed cutting edge innovations for the future, as well as experimentation across all the arts - including music, film, sculpture, architecture and design. Such massive events - though fuelled by corporate interests and state propaganda - were nevertheless testbeds for incredible visions of future societies, in which art forms collide and unify into possibilities for new and better ways to design, create and build a better world. Progress and Harmony for Mankind was the theme of Expo 70.
This Synch Pulse programme draws on that spirit of expo experimentation with a mind opening selection of films, including footage from World's Fairs in Brussels, New York, Montreal, and Osaka.
