Join ProjectOurs for an alternative Valentine’s Day screening of John Cameron Mitchell’s cult classic, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, followed by a post-film discussion at The Rose Hill. As divisive as it is unifying, Mitchell’s glam rock musical remains a staple in queer cinema and an intrepid exploration of the gender binary.

Hedwig, a German singer touring a chain of diners and dives across the US, is in search of her soulmate after a botched gender reassignment surgery leaves her questioning her place in the world. Fuelled by bitterness towards an ex-lover who has plagiarised her songs to become a renowned star, Hedwig’s anti-romantic rock odyssey is one of vulnerability, rage, and the empowerment that can only come with self-discovery.

From its humble origins in 1998 as a rock musical performed in a small West Village theatre, Hedwig and the Angry Inch has become an enduring, if polarising, work in the world of art, film and queer subcultures.

ProjectOurs is a collective of women and gender minority filmmakers and programmers based in Brighton. We create a space for artists across a range of disciplines to pursue filmmaking and curation, centering playfulness, kindness and experimentation in our practice. On the second Tuesday of every month, we host a film screening at The Rose Hill in Brighton 🌹
