Liz Ikamba EP Launch + Djenzuzu Mbira & Sax (Linos Wengara + Gary Cove)

  • The Rose Hill 70 Rose Hill Terrace Brighton, England, BN1 4JL United Kingdom (map)

Friday 19th May | 7pm | £10 advance tickets / £7 concessions

Congolese-tilted Afro-Soul-Folk to make your heart soar and your body groove! This is genre-bending and timeless music.

British-Congolese singer and multi-instrumentalist Liz Ikamba plays songs from her debut EP 'Mama', with support from Djenzuzu Mbira & Sax.

Cross-pollinating influences from Folk and Jazz to Reggae, Hip Hop and Soul; these songs speak from Liz's experience as a mixed-heritage woman and artist living in the UK. They tell a personal and intimate story of identity, culture and belonging, and offer reflections on love, loss and life-learnings. The title track 'Mama', and the first song Liz wrote in Lingala, is dedicated to Liz’s late mother Georgina, who travelled to the Congo to live and work as a midwife.

Expect groove-driven riffs and sun-fuelled rhythms, loop-pedal experiments and soul-infused vocals; with catchy hooks and harmonies in both English and Lingala. This is set to be an intimate, interactive and energising experience to remember.

Our support for the night brings the gorgeous mellifluous sounds of Djenzuzu Mbira & Sax, aka Linos Wengara Magaya and Gary Cove, long-standing Brighton music veterans who have played together for many years. Djenzuzu blend the water-like tones of traditional Zimbabwean mbira with piercingly spirited and lyrical soprano sax. We are in good hands to set the night off to a beautiful start!
