Author, Adam Reeves presents the first issue in his comic book series about Jamaican ska trombonist Don Drummond, a founder member of '60s ska giants the Skatalites. Incorporating short films and comic art, Adam will discuss his journey into the world of comics production, with Q&A and book signing, followed by a DJ set from Chichester's Ska-Beat-Soul.
Don Drummonds music with the Skatalites touched the stars, but ended in tragedy. From the backstreets of Kingston in the 1940s, child prodigy Drummond rose to international fame, and with his band the Skatalites helped pioneer the ska sound that defined the era and sowed the seeds of reggae. Born into a middle-class Lebanese-Jamaican family, rhumba dancer Anita 'Margarita' Mahfood was irresistibly drawn to the nightclub stages and forbidden Rasta drumming sessions in Kingston's Wareika Hills. Together they made history – but neither lived to tell the tale...
