Synch Pulse - No. 11: Op Art, Pop Art

  • The Rose Hill 70 Rose Hill Terrace Brighton, England, BN1 4JL United Kingdom (map)

Wednesday 18th December | 7pm | Free

Although the two 20th Century art movements Op and Pop are distinctly different and separate from the world of experimental film and music, there are nonetheless, interesting parallels and connections to be made. This programme shifts between films featuring bold, moving abstract patterns, and imagery drawn from mass produced popular culture, comics and advertising. Expect paper cut-outs, frenzied animation, optical effects, vintage adverts, electronic sounds and a variety of superheroes.

About Synch Pulse

Dedicated to screening short experimental films, Synch Pulse features a themed selection delving into the archives to show vintage and contemporary work, with a strong emphasis on electronic and experimental music soundtracks. Designed as a free entry, monthly get-together for the uninitiated as well as devotees of underground movies and alternative sounds, it is compiled and presented by Brighton based artist-filmmaker and electronic music composer, Ian Helliwell.

Carefully assembled, each Synch Pulse programme will include local and international avant-garde shorts from past and present to explore a specific theme as represented through experimental film, animation and documentary, often with unusual electronic soundtracks. The hope is to create an ongoing series of relaxed short film evenings - plus occasional performances and discussions - to create a nexus for independent, left field movies. Future themed programmes will cover: architecture; railways; cities; sound visualization; space flight; world's fairs; collage; analogue synthesizers; time; and synthetic sound.
