Award winning cuban musician Alejandro Vargas + Galician award winning writer and performer Xelís de Toro will be working in residence here for a week to explore music, performance and poetry experimentation. The show on Saturday will be some of their work in progress with guest perfomrances from Alistair Strachan, R.Dyer and a screening Modern Medicine.
Alejandro Vargas is multi-awarded Cuban musician resident in Galicia (Spain), receiving important jazz (Best Jazz record Cubadisco, 2008) and composition (Special award Cubadisco 2013) awards and has been journeying in recent years to a more experimental sound work. https://alejandrovargas.info/
Xelís de Toro is a Galician multi-awarded writer and performer based in the UK. He has worked in theatre, live art, performance as a solo artist, in a duo laboratoro and is the vocalist of the Brighton based band chopchop. https://xelisdetoro.net/
They are collaborating all week to create 19 new improvised pieces. They are all inspired by 'De catro a catro' the Galician poetry book by Manoel Antonio. "The book was written as a 'sea journal’ as the poet was a sailor however it feels more like entering different emotional states, a liquid and a lonesome mind space"
They are also working with Mim King to develop the choreography element of the new work - Mim is an Artist/Choreographer/Dancer/Live Artist/Filmmaker born in London, living in Brighton, working Internationally.
