Mehfil-e-Rose Hill with Jason Kalidas & Denis Kucherov

  • The Rose Hill 70 Rose Hill Terrace Brighton, England, BN1 4JL United Kingdom (map)

Thursday 14th November | 7pm | £10-14 advance tickets

Committed to bringing you quality music, we're delighted to offer you the second performance of 'Mehfil - e - Rose Hill' - a year's programme of south Asian classical raag music.

The evening is brought to you by local curator Atiya Gourlay, who is collaborating with The Rose Hill to showcase Jason Kalidas on bansuri (south Asian bamboo flute) and Denis Kucherov on tabla. Both artists have dedicated decades to studying and performing the complex yet soulful art of south Asian raag, both in the UK and in India. Experience and delight in the soaring sounds of the natural bamboo flute and the sparkling beats of the tabla.

Jason plays the simple, unassuming bansuri flute to produce an ethereal and healing sound, speaking straight to the heart and expressed through centuries' old ancient raags. Denis accompanies on the tabla, providing energising rhythmic patterns. As they play together and individually, they each provide a framework of melody and rhythm, while they improvise both solo and as a duo. In the right setting and when performed by high-calibre musicians, as are Jason and Denis, the effect of such improvisation through raag music is both mesmerising and exhilarating.

The concept of "Mehfil" is truly special: offering a unique opportunity to enjoy live music in a close-knit setting. 'Mehfil' has been defined as "a gathering where music or poetry is performed for a small audience in an intimate setting". The focus on South Asian raag and its intricate improvisations will make for an unforgettable immersive evening. It promises to be an intimate, healing and enriching experience. See you there!
