Listen Club #17 With Elona Hoover

  • The Rose Hill 70 Rose Hill Terrace Brighton, England, BN1 4JL United Kingdom (map)

TUESDAY 30TH OCTOBER | 7pm | £5 advance tickets

Listen Club is about listening together is in the same space, with the possibility of sharing impressions and casual discussion afterwards. Listen Club hopes to provide a counterpoint to the quick paced personal consumption of music with a more patient shared experience; a deep listen, together, in order to foster community.

How does one make common worlds in contexts where relations to land have been severed by generations of concrete?

“The creation of the commons requires responsiveness, a turning toward one another, at the same time leaving space for adversity and silence… This is how commons must be approached, with a keen sensitivity to polyphony.” A.M. Kanngieser (2015)

In this session we will listen to sonic compositions and experimental works that evoke earthly relations, question the separation between natural and urban, and explore ways of making common worlds in austere places. It also includes a five-part sound piece composed by Elona M Hoover and Matthieu Lebrun which explores the silence, spaces of adversity, polyphony and responsiveness that emerge when listening with commons and concrete.

“Listen for a call. When the call comes, answer with your own call. Call until you receive an answering call. Echo that call.” Pauline Oliveros, Response Ability (1978).

Elona Hoover is a researcher, artist and curator with a doctorate in human geography from the University of Brighton. Her interests include urban commoning, affective practices, relational ethics, and the feminist political ecologies of extractivism, with a commitment to transdisciplinary collaborations that weave together art, activism, and critical scholarship.
