Although collage has a long established place in visual art, its use in commercial cinema is rare. Experimental film and video however, provides a platform to play with and reorder both picture and sound, by using fragments of pre-existing material to generate new combinations and meanings. Found footage from the amateur or commercial world is repurposed and reimagined, and regular soundtrack conventions are disrupted to create unexpected juxtapositions and new textures. Sidestepping storytelling, this programme will focus on a range of short films which recycle existing film and video, and explore audiovisual cut-ups and collage.
Synch Pulse is a monthly free entry experimental film night featuring a different theme for each event, represented by archive and contemporary shorts, animations, documentaries, vintage adverts and trailers, and public information films. With a strong emphasis on electronic music and experimental soundtracks, the evenings are compiled and presented by artist, musician and filmmaker Ian Helliwell.
