Mainstream film and television has regularly featured robots and machine-like beings, and the fascination with androids continues, becoming more relevant than ever with the rapid rise of AI and autonomous thinking machines. Appearing in avant-garde cinema far less often, there are nonetheless various examples of robots in offbeat documentaries and animations backed by experimental electronic sounds. For this programme the focus will be on a mix of vintage and contemporary shorts where men-machines and fembots take centre stage.

Synch Pulse is a monthly free entry experimental film night featuring a different theme for each event, represented by archive and contemporary shorts, animations, documentaries, vintage adverts and trailers, and public information films. With a strong emphasis on electronic music and experimental soundtracks, the evenings are compiled and presented by artist, musician and filmmaker Ian Helliwell.
