Atongo Zimba is an award-winning artist, master kologo player, singer and a griot from the north of Ghana. He was very young when his grandfather taught him to play and build the kologo, a two stringed lute which has its variations throughout the savannahs and deserts of West Africa. His early career saw him opening weekend shows for Fela Kuti at the Afrika Shrine with his solo performances, then going on playing with the likes of Osibisa and the Pan African Orchestra.
After a ten year hiatus from recording and multiple World Tours, Atongo’s new album is his most accomplished to-date, firmly establishing his reputation as one of Africa’s top traditional music artists. Celebrating the release of “A to Z” with a special limited-capacity show at The Rose Hill, Atongo has recruited a local band to showcase songs from the album to an intimate audience.
Support comes from local Zimbabwean mbira maestro Linos Wengara Magaya & Tim Lloyd. Mbira is the instrument used in Zimbabwean spiritual culture to connect with our ancestral spirits and celebrate our roots. Expect a selection of songs from the vast repertoire of Zimbabwean spiritual music as well as some soulful Mbira Reggae.
