We are delighted to invite BlackBright to work in residence on their new performance ‘Third Culture Kids’
A radical new approach to storytelling: theatre, music and gaming collide in BRiGHTBLACK’S new immersive performance “Third Culture Kids”.
Imagine you go to the cinema but the movie is controlled live on stage. Two performers tell two autobiographical stories, the journey of two outsiders ,playing out the scenes via a video game projected behind them. The soundtrack to their world is adaptive, making every performance of it unique. A story the audience can see themselves in as the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur.
This is the tale of two children, both pushed so far to the edge of their worlds that a third space opens up. "Third culture kid" was first coined in 1950s America to describe children growing up in a culture outside that of their parents. Brightblacks new performance applies this notion to our turbulent times, where cultural unrest, social media and the internet makes Third Culture Kids of us all.
BRiGHTBLACK are Simon Wilkinson and Myra Appannah who began collaborating after independently creating two of the UK's largest layered reality shows: SOMNAI and Whilst The Rest Were Sleeping. They create immersive artworks, playable culture, events, festivals and run Immersive StoryLab. Their work has featured at Tate Modern and toured over 30 nations on six continents.
During the residency, they will be developing the story, testing and improving the game and performance, exploring and experimenting with OBS (live streaming software), and seeing how they can increase audience immersion and develop networks with marginalised movements captured and unified by Third Culture e.g. BLM.
