SOUL TO SOUL: CINEMATIC ROUTES OF RETURN
Black History Month 2026
What does it mean for Black worlds separated by slavery, colonialism and migration to encounter one another again?
Sandpit Collective in partnership with The Rose Hill present, as part of the Other Asias Film Programme, Soul to Soul: Cinematic Routes of Return, a three-film season tracing routes between Africa and its diasporas through independence, migration, belonging and return.
Opening our Black History Month season, Soul to Soul captures the historic 1971 encounter between African American and Ghanaian musicians in Accra. Featuring Wilson Pickett, Ike & Tina Turner and Santana, this exhilarating concert film celebrates music as a route across the Atlantic, connecting histories of displacement with Pan-Africanism, Black liberation and return.

Running time: 96 mins
Filmed fourteen years after Ghanaian independence, Soul to Soul is more than a remarkable concert film. Emerging amid the currents of Pan-Africanism and Black liberation, it captures a moment when Africa could be imagined by the diaspora as both an ancestral home and a site of political and cultural possibility. Music becomes a route across the Atlantic carrying histories of displacement while opening possibilities for recognition, exchange and return.
The screening will be introduced (15 mins) and will be followed by an informal facilitated discussion.
